Party-list coalition in shambles: Mikee Romero endorses Velasco without colleagues’ nod
1-PACMAN party-list Rep. Mikee Romero has committed what could be considered as the ultimate act of betrayal for the party-list coalition by endorsing a lawmaker for House Speaker without getting the group’s approval.
Romero, the president of the party-list coalition, signed Tuesday (June 25) a manifesto supporting the speakership bid of Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco.
Politiko, however, learned that Romero didn’t have the coalition’s consent when he signed the manifesto.
The 54-member bloc had deferred deciding who it should endorse for Speaker after President Rodrigo Duterte said he would make his preference known by June 28.
However, results of the secret balloting conducted last week in Quezon City showed Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez as the preferred Speaker of majority of party-list lawmakers over Velasco.
Romero inadvertently let his support for Velasco show earlier this month when he told party-list lawmakers in a private Viber chat group to send details of an event organized by another aspirant for Speaker, Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.
“Send it to lord para alam nya sino mga kalaban natin,” the lawmaker reportedly said, before subsequently deleting his message.
A source told Politiko that Romero wants to become Majority Leader if Velasco wins as Speaker.
