There’s one last kink to be ironed out regarding the committee chairmanships in the Senate— and it involves Senator-elect Pia Cayetano.
Politiko learned that Cayetano wants to head the education committee, which will be left without a chairperson with the impending exit of Senator Francis Escudero.
The problem, however, is that there’s not just one but two senators who are set to head the committee.
Politiko’s source said the education panel will be split into two committees in the 18th Congress. The committee on basic education will be chaired by Senator Joel Villanueva while the committee on higher education will be headed by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.
Cayetano is a member of the Nacionalista Party (NP), whose leader, Senator Cynthia Villar, was rumored as a possible challenger to Senate President Tito Sotto for the top Senate post.
Villar has said she will refrain from supporting Sotto’s continued rule as Senate President unless all of her party mates are happy with their committee assignments.
Will Cayetano’s insistence on heading the education committee prompt Villar to challenge Sotto?
There’s three more weeks left before the 18th Congress opens and a lot can happen before then.
