Senator Panfilo Lacson revealed that his longtime friend, assassinated Tanauan City Mayor Antonio Halili, idolized President Rodrigo Duterte when he was still alive and wanted to emulate his anti-drugs and criminality drive in the city and even campaigned for him during the 2016 elections despite being part of the then-ruling Liberal Party.
Lacson said over radio dwIZ Saturday (July 7) that Halili’s family told him the slain mayor talked to barangay captains during the elections to ensure Duterte’s win in the city.
How their dad, of course ang asawa, paano iniidolo ni Mayor Halili si President Duterte. At paano sinuportahan,” Lacson said.
At lagi niyang sinabi sa akin gusto niyang gayahin, kaya niya naisip ang Walk of Shame,” he said.
Duterte, just hours after the fatal shooting of Halili during a city hall flag ceremony on Monday (July 2), linked the mayor’s killing to his supposed involvement in drugs, going against an earlier statement of the Malacañang which hailed the local executive for being an ally in the government’s war against drugs.
Halili’s family insists that the slain mayor is not involved in drugs. This was attested to by Lacson during the weekly Kapihan sa Senado last Thursday (July 5), where he called Duterte’s statement against the mayor the ‘cruelest eulogy.”
Despite his earlier remark against Halili, Duterte would reportedly be visiting the wake of the mayor.
