PH telco vulnerable to China sabotage, cyber manipulation – Alejano
By JOHN CARLO M. CAHINHINAN
Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano has warned anew about the security implications of the entry of China Telecom in the country’s telecoms industry.
Alejano, a strong critic of Chinese incursions in the West Philippine Sea, said welcoming Chinese companies in the third telco selection has been questionable from the start considering the standing conflict with the Asian superpower in several territories inside the Philippine territory.
“China is a primary threat to our national security. Allowing them a chance to control an infrastructure as critical as telecommunications is tantamount to capitulation,” he said.
China Telecom is part of the winning Mindanao Islamic Telephone Co., Inc. (MISLATEL) consortium alongside Udenna Corporation-Chelsea Logistics.
Alejano said allowing the operation of Mislatel Consortium was tantamount in opening the country’s digital privacy “to sabotage and cyber manipulation of China.”
The solon said that while he supports enhancement of telecommunication services through introduction of new players, the process should be conducted with a level playing field and more importantly, it should not compromise our national security.
Alejano urged the Duterte administration to reconsider choosing other players which the Philippines has no conflict of interest with.
