Philippines, China ink investment, anti-drug accords

The Philippines has forged new agreements with China on investment promotion and drug rehabilitation.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier met Chinese President Xi Jinpiong in a bilateral meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The agreements signed Thursday are:

1. Exchange of letters on production capacity and investment cooperation between the Philippines and China

2. Hand-over certificate grant-aaid for the dangerous drugs abuse treatment and rehabilitation centers roject between the government of the Republic of the Philippines and the government of the People’s Republic of China

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the first agreement proposes a project list which will serve as the focus of cooperation between the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

NEDA Secretary Ernesto Pernia and NDRC Chairman He Lifeng signed the document on behalf of their respective countries.

The second agreement, on one hand, pertains to the ceremonial hand-over of the drug treatment facilities in Sarangani and Agusan del Norte provided by China through grant, said Panelo.

Ambassador Jose Santiago Sta. Romana signed the document on our country’s behalf while Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan signed for China.

At the bilateral meeting, Duterte thanked Xi for the latter’s personal invitation to the second Belt and Road forum to be held from April 25 to 27.

“The forum provides another opportunity to renew and reaffirm our valued relations based on mutual trust, respect, and friendship and must continue to grow strength and meaning in the coming years,” the President said.

He also pressed the Asian neighbors to develop new areas of cooperation and partnership.

“We look forward to a productive discusson on matters of mutual interest and concern. We keep to listen to His Excellency’s thoughts on progress, achieved in further strengthening bilateral relations in the recent development in our region,” said Duterte.

The Chief Executive likewise greeted China on its 70th founding anniversary, congratulating the East Asian nation on its economic achievements.
