Pilipino rin sila! Gordon calls for end to LGBT stigma
“I am for equality.”
Senator Richard Gordon made the declaration as he asked the public to respect the LGBTQIA+ community and sought an end to the discrimination against them.
Gordon said he has LGBT friends and staff who live and work passionately and virtuously. He said he commends them for exerting tremendous effort to live their life with utmost pride.
“Our society should start acknowledging the members of the LGBTQIA+ community for what they are and what they choose to be. We should not judge them based on the life they choose, rather, we must embrace them as members of our society,” he said in a Facebook post.
“It’s high time we end the stigma against them, for they are, after all, our fellow Filipinos,” he said.
Gordon made the statement after a transgender woman was barred from using a female comfort room at a mall in Quezon City.
The controversy triggered renewed calls to respect transgender people and establish all-gender restrooms in public places.
