Plans to impeach Duterte doomed to fail. Alvarez tells why

This early, prospective House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is discouraging people who might be thinking of impeaching President-elect Rodrigo Duterte from proceeding with their plans by saying their efforts will just be for naught.

But why is Alvarez so confident that attempts to impeach Duterte will fail?

For one, the firebrand politiko will is determined to keep his post because he knew he earned the people’s mandate in the May 9 elections.

“The President will not take it (impeachment) sitting down, especially when you have the mandate of people on your side,” he said during the Meet the Inquirer forum on Tuesday (June 14).

The lawmaker then dished out this advice to those who are still even dreaming of impeaching Duterte: “Wag na lang tayong mag-adventure doon.”

Alvarez said impeachment proceedings would have even the slightest chance of succeeding if the Chief Executive is weak.

He likened the possibility of impeaching a strong leader like Duterte to an accident waiting to happen.

“Pag strong leader, mahirap gawin. Before you do it, nasagasaan ka na,” the lawmaker said.

There have been rumors that LP stalwarts will try to have Duterte impeached under a so-called “Plan B” so he would be replaced by Vice President-elect Leni Robredo.

However, this seems unlikely as the LP’s ranks have become smaller after the elections as party stalwarts jump ship to PDP-Laban, Duterte’s political party.
