Poe on extending martial law in Mindanao: ‘Is there an actual rebellion?’
Senator Grace Poe on Tuesday said she has several questions to ask the Armed Forces of the Philippines about its recommendation to extend martial law in Mindanao.
“There are two aspects to this. There’s the political and the legal and I would like to stick to the legal aspect of actually deciding whether or not it should be (extended),” she said in an interview on ANC.
“Martial law can be ordered if there’s an actual rebellion so I would like to ask the AFP, what is their basis for an actual rebellion? Nandiyan pa ba ang Maute? Nandiyan pa ba ang ISIS?” Poe said.
She anticipated that the military would answer in the affirmative but wanted details.
“Probably they will say ‘oo nandiyan pa sila mga splinter groups,’ so please tell us why you need that. And also if you have martial law ha, kasi they said theirs is already their version of martial law, which is watered down and I think what they want are checkpoints etc.,” Poe said.
“Remember in martial law you have to takeover civilian functions, so what does it mean? Is a General sitting in Marawi taking charge of rehabilitation now?” Poe said.
“So these are questions that they need to answer. If they need more money for intelligence, just particularly for that, that’s something you can do without martial law,” she said.
