Power trip! Calida’s quo warranto vs. ABS-CBN ‘abuse of power, harassment’ – VP Robredo

Vice President Leni Robredo did not mince words in denouncing the move to revoke the franchise of ABS-CBN Corp. through a quo warranto petition filed by the government’s chief lawyer himself before the Supreme Court.

In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday (February 11), Robredo called this latest move of Solicitor General Jose Calida as an act of “harassment” and “abuse of power.”

Samakatuwid: Pang-aabuso ito ng kapangyarihan,” she said.

The Vice President called on the public to remain vigilant amid this veiled attempt to repress people’s collective responsibility to hear the truth.

Robredo also noted that stripping the media conglomerate through a quo warranto petition goes against the normal process of granting a franchise through the Congress’ approval.

It may be recalled that it was also Calida who filed for the removal of former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno from office through a quo warranto petition, preempting a proper impeachment trial.

She then warned that this could set a dangerous precedent since the government can do the same to stifle press freedom—or even the public’s right to free speech.

The former Camarines Sur lawmaker urged her former colleagues at the House of Representatives to be one in the fight for the freedom of the press.
