“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before the fall.” – Proverbs 16:18

Taguig Rep. Alan Cayetano finally waved the white flag on Tuesday, October 13, after weeks of refusing to honor a term-sharing deal, brokered by President Rodrigo Duterte himself, as the new Speaker Lord Velasco and the new majority bloc trooped to Batasan.

Cayetano fought zealously to stay in his seat longer, for at least until he celebrated his 50th birthday on October 29, but he ended up packing his bags a day before Velasco was supposed to take over in their gentleman’s agreement, October 14.

Velasco was voted by 186 House members as Speaker inside the Batasan, a day after a show of force at the Celebrity Sports Plaza which Cayetano and his allies – notably Representatives LRay Villafuerte, Boyet Gonzales, Jonathan Sy-Alvarado, Raneo Abu and Eric Yap – rubbished as “fake” and “illegal.”

To save further embarrassment, Cayetano announced his irrevocable resignation on Facebook after realizing that his former allies had deserted him and voted to oust him and replace him with Velasco.

“Right now, verbally, I am tendering my irrevocable resignation as Speaker of the House of the Republic of the Philippines. At 3 o’clock, elect your new Speaker and pass the budget,” said Cayetano who refused to give legitimacy to Velasco’s election in Both Batasan and Celebrity Plaza. “Please start calling me Alan again.”

Cayetano, who was at his Taguig home while Velasco was taking over his seat, accused Velasco and his allies of committing “acts of violence” in their march to Batasan.

Velasco and his allies had been forced to hold session at Celebrity Plaza on Monday because Cayetano had barricaded Batasan as early a last week by allegedly locking the main entrance, turning off the power lines, and cutting off access to the internet and the House’s Facebook page (this is partly the reason Radio and Television Malacanang carried the Celebrity voting).

Cayetano did not mouth any Bible verse in his Facebook post like he used to do when he was Speaker.
