Public interview for Chief Justice wannabes set on Oct. 2

Four Supreme Court (SC) justices eyeing the chief justice seat will be facing the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) this October 2.

The JBC announced that it will hold a public interview to the only four candidates who applied for the post which will be vacated by Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin once he retires on his 70th birthday on October 18.

Those who have submitted their nominations and applications in time of the September 2 deadline are Justices Diosdado Peralta, Estela Perlas-Bernabe, Andres Reyes Jr. And Jose Reyes Jr.

The JBC begun accepting applications and nominations last July 5 in anticipation Bersamin’s retirement.

Bersamin, who is the son of late former Abra governor Luis Bersamin Sr., has been appointed chief justice by President Rodrigo Duterte on Nov. 28, 2018.

Prior his appointment, he has been serving as Supreme Court (SC) justice since his appointment on March 10, 2003 by then President Gloria Macapasgal-Arroyo.

He also served as Quezon City regional trial court judge and Court of Appeals (CA) justice.
