Former Senator Joey Lina believes ABS-CBN Corp., its employees and its fans were played for a fool by Speaker Alan Cayetano and his House allies and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
Cayetano has repeatedly declared ABS-CBN would continue to air even if its franchise ran out in May 4. But when NTC issued a cease and desist order on May instead of a provisional authority as it promised, Cayetano could do nothing but just threaten to slap the watchdog with contempt.
Lina called ABS-CBN’s shutdown a “shock” and “betrayal of trust.” But Lina thinks Cayetano and NTC’s actions were all just part of an act. “Was this government action well thought out or just pure and simple treachery to shut down the network for reasons only those behind it know?” asked Lina in his Manila Bulletin column.
“Were all the previous statements about granting ABS-CBN provisional authority to operate just part of a grand conspiracy? Was it after all just a Machiavellian good-cop-bad-cop scheme to simply shut down ABS-CBN and lay the blame on some scapegoat to evade the ire of millions of grateful followers of the network who rely on it for news, relevant information, and entertainment,” said the ABS-CBN radio anchor.
