Purely Pinoy! ABS-CBN CEO denies Gabby Lopez holds US passport
ABS-CBN Chief Executive Officer Carlo Katigbak denied Monday (February 24) a report claiming that the networks chairman emeritus, Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III, is an American citizen.
Appearing at the Senate committee on public services’ hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise, Katigbak said Lopez is purely Filipino.
“Sa pagkakaalam ko po is Gabby Lopez is Filipino, tatay po niya ay Filipino at meron pa siyang Filipino passport,” Katigbak said.
Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa questioned ABS-CBN executives about Lopez’s citizenship at the heels of a Manila Times column by former Cabinet Secretary Rigoberto “Bobi” Tiglao claiming Lopez has an American passport.
Tiglao claimed Lopez only acquired Filipino citizenship in 2004, after the Dual Citizenship Law took effect.
He accused ABS-CBN of violating the Constitution, which states that mass media companies should be owned by Filipino citizens.
Mario Luza Bautista, ABS-CBN’s general counsel, said the network will submit to the Senate documents proving Lopez’s Filipino citizenship.
