Ramon Ang turns tables on Cayetano: Alan asked for my help several times, I never said no
San Miguel Corp. President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Ramon Ang has revealed that Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano sought his help “many times” after the lawmaker accused him of supporting the speakership bid of Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco.
In a statement Monday (July 1), Ang denied supporting any of the contenders for House Speaker. He said Cayetano knows he never sought political favors from anyone.
“In fact he (Cayetano) himself can attest to this because he has sought my help many times. I have always found a way to help him in my personal capacity. And in all those instances, I treated him fairly and never said no,” the bilyonaryo businessman said.
Cayetano insinuated in an interview on ANC’s Headstart that Ang was bankrolling Velasco’s speakership bid.
“The resources that are flowing cannot come from yung mag-asawa lang (just the couple),” he said, referring to Velasco and his wife.
Cayetano claimed that Velasco’s wife had worked as a lobbyist for SMC’s top honcho.
Ang said he has no role in the speakership race. He said he never campaigned for any particular politiko to advance his business interests, even though he’s a friend to many influential people.
“We think that that race is down to the President’s choice, or who his party chooses. I am not part of that. I don’t think anyone, no matter what they do, can influence the President or Congress,” he said.
The new Speaker will be elected when the 18th Congress formally opens on July 22.
