Malacañang is leaving it to Congress to decide on the proposal to rename the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, and ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Go Yap have filed a bill seeking to rename NAIA to Paliparang Pandaigdig ng Pilipinas.
“Iniiwan po namin yan sa Kongreso dahil kinakailangan po ng batas kung kinakailangang baguhin ang pangalan ng NAIA,” according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
Formerly called Manila International Airport (MIA), NAIA was renamed after the late opposition senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. through Republic Act 6639 in 1987.
It can be recalled that on his arrival to Manila after years of living in exile in the United States, Aquino, a staunch critic of the Marcos regime, was murdered at the MIA tarmac.
