Respeto naman sa GMA at TV5! Tito Sotto calls out Angara for ABS-CBN shutdown drama
Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III reminded his colleagues to keep their emotions in check after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) ordered ABS-CBN to stop its operations since its franchise has expired.
During the session Tuesday (May 5), Senator Sonny Angara slammed the NTC for ordering ABS-CBN to go off the air at the height of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
“People need to be informed by reliable sources at this time. We need reliable information and [NTC] decided to shut down one of our sources of information,” he said.
Sotto, however, pointed out that ABS-CBN is not the only commercial broadcast network in the country.
“We do understand the point of Angara. Give due respect to channel 7 and channel 5. That made it sound like they’re (ABS-CBN) the only source of news,” he said.
Angara’s wife, Tootsy, is an executive at ABS-CBN’s sales department.
NTC ordered ABS-CBN to shut down immediately since it failed to get a new franchise from Congress. The agency ignored the House of Representatives’ order for the issuance of provisional authority for the network.
ABS-CBN and its AM and FM radio stations went off the air Tuesday night in compliance with NTC’s order.
