Vice President Leni Robredo believes there is no reason to postpone the 2022 national and local elections despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Robredo said Sunday (September 27) that people can vote if they can go out to visit tourism destinations.
“Kung kaya nang buksan iyong Manila Bay, bubuksan na din iyong Boracay, bubuksan iyong ibang tourism sites, walang dahilan, walang dahilan para i-postpone,” she said.
Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo urged the Commission on Elections last week to study the possibility of postponing the 2022 elections as voters could be at risk of catching COVID-19 when they go to the polls. His suggestion, however, has been criticized by politikos and legal experts alike, saying it is unconstitutional to move the date of the elections.
Robredo said the Philippines should instead learn the best practices from countries which proceeded with their elections despite the pandemic.
