Vice President Leni Robredo has thrown her support behind the Philippine national men’s basketball team after President Rodrigo Duterte said the players don’t have a chance against Italy in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Robredo said Sunday (August 11) that Gilas Pilipinas shows Filipinos’ persistence in overcoming odds.
“Tayong mga Pilipino, talagang parati naman tayong dehado sa lahat, pero pinapakita natin na kahit tayo dehado, lumalaban talaga tayo nang tunay. Kaya sa mga Gilas players, maraming salamat po sa pag-represent ninyo sa ating bansa,” she said in her weekly radio show, “Biserbisyong Leni.”
Robredo said Gilas Pilipinas needs all the support it can get because they are up against formidable teams in the FIBA World Cup.
“Alam namin na ibubuhos ninyo lahat ng kaya ninyong gawin. Matalo man o manalo, nagpapasalamat na tayo,” she told the basketball team.
President Rodrigo Duterte expressed doubts over Gilas Pilipinas’ chances of winning against Italy in an August 6 speech before Filipino-Chinese businessmen.
“Wala, talo tayo, walang laban. Sa China na lang tayo magpusta,” he said, adding that Italy has taller basketabll players than the Philippines.
