Vice President Leni Robredo is puzzled why the government allows droves of Chinese citizens to work in the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO) industry when gambling is illegal in China.
Robredo questioned the influx of Chinese workers in her weekly radio show Sunday (August 11).
“‘Di ba, hininto nga natin iyong ating mga gambling, iyong mga permits, bakit sila pinapayagan? Tapos iligal sa kanila kaya pumupunta dito. Kung iligal sa kanila, bakit tayo iyong nagha-house?” she asked.
China recently announced a crackdown on gambling overseas as it hinted that several of its citizens were working illegally in POGO centers.
The Chinese Embassy in Manila also bucked the state gaming operator’s plan to confine Chinese workers to so called POGO “hubs,” saying it might “infringe on the basic legal rights” of its citizens.
Robredo said it is important for the government to know how many Chinese are in the country and the purpose of their stay.
“Sobrang dami na na hindi alam iyong numbers. At tingin ko kailangan talagang balikan iyong polisiya, tignan iyong mga nandito, ano iyong ginagawa nila, ligal ba iyong pag-stay nila nang matagal,” she said.
