Robredo slams Batocabe’s killing in broad daylight: This can’t be the new normal!
Vice President Leni Robredo has expressed outrage over the death of Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe, who was shot dead in Daraga, Albay Saturday (December 22).
In a statement, Robredo said she feels a “growing rage” over Batocabe’s killing since it is committed in a brazen fashion, in broad daylight.
“This cannot, and must not be the new normal; when Filipinos, young and old, rich and poor, are gunned down in cold blood as a matter of course, and where none of us can feel safe. This impunity must end,” she said.
Batocabe was shot dead by an unidentified assailant while at a gift-giving event in Barangay Burgos. His bodyguard was also killed in the ambush.
The three-term lawmaker was running for mayor of Daraga. The latest survey held in the town showed he was leading the race ahead of incumbent town mayor Carlwyn Baldo and vice mayor Victor Perete.
Robredo remembered Batocabe with fondness since they both hail from the Bicol region and were batchmates at the University of the Philippines Diliman. They also served together in the 16th Congress, when the Vice President was a congresswoman for Camarines Sur’s 3rd district.
“He was smart and eloquent, witty and cheerful, a person who lived life to the fullest. He will be missed, both for his service and his friendship,” she said.
