Robredo wary of Piñol’s proposal for nationwide river dredging: Makukurakot lang pera dyan!

Vice President Leni Robredo is cool to the proposal of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol to dredge Bicol River and other major rivers in the country, saying it is prone to corruption.

Robredo said Sunday (January 6) desilting was discouraged during the time of former Public Works Secretary Rogelio “Babes” Singson because it could be a source of corruption if not done right.

“Iyong pagpalalim ng… Hindi mo nakikita kasi nasa ilalim siya ng tubig,” she said on her “Biserbisyong Leni” show over RMN.

During her stint as a congresswoman of Camarines Sur, Robredo said she made sure there were no opportunities for corruption in cleaning up the Bicol River by renting equipment from the Department of Public Works and Highways.

The local government, she said, funded the fuel used by the heavy equipment for the task.

“So hindi siya kontrata, kasi hiniram mo lang iyong equipment, tapos iyong gasolina lang iyong gastos,” she said.

Robredo said that while it was necessary to clean rivers, the government should make sure it would not turn into a money-making venture for corrupt politikos.

Piñol suggested dredging rivers to ease flooding during the situation briefing on Tropical Depression Usman on January 4 in Camarines Sur.

He made the proposal after Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte sought updates on the proposed desilting of Bicol River.

“Sir, actually hindi lang po Bicol River sir ang kailangan i-dredge. If you remember sir, we were in Cagayan Valley October 2016, Typhoon Lawin. And you said that dapat i-review na kung pwedeng i-dredge ‘yung Cagayan River kasi mababaw lang talaga sir,” Piñol told President Rodrigo Duterte,

“Cagayan River, Pampanga River, Bicol River, Rio Grande de Mindanao, Agusan River. These are the major river systems, Mr. President,” he added.
