Roque on Duterte picking Chiz, Bongbong over Alan: Mas marami pang qualified
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque defended President Rodrigo Duterte’s indirect snub of his losing running mate in the 2016 elections.
Roque said Duterte was merely voicing out what was obvious in the 2016 elections that Foreign Affairs Alan Cayetano was not in the same level as other vice presidential bets such as Senator Chiz Escudero and former Senator Bongbong Marcos.
“I guess he’s just emphasizing that there are more people qualified, okay. I don’t have to interpret what the President says as far as the Vice President is concerned. Let’s not belabor the point,” said Roque in a briefing.
” I guess he was just saying parang there are so many other people who are better qualified ‘no. But I’m sure—iyon na nga ‘no, the list is longer,” said Roque.
Last Tuesday, Duterte said: “I think deep in my heart, if you follow the succession and (Vice President Leni) Robredo takes over, hindi niya kaya. That’s
my honest opinion ko lang. Kung sino lang sana diyan, in the likes of Escudero or Bongbong Marcos.”
Roque, however, said he was sure that Duterte voted his running mate in the 2016 elections and not Escudero who ran with Senator Grace Poe nor Marcos who ran with the late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.
“Sasabihin ko sana, ‘Let’s see what Alan Cayetano has to say about that’. .” Hi, Alan, I love you. Kayo naman masyado kayong seryoso. Preference na ni Presidente iyon. Pero I’m sure his number one preference is Alan Cayetano ‘no, he ran with Alan Cayetano,” said Roque to an amused press corps.
