Saguisag explains why Duterte running for VP is unconstitutional: But ‘terrorized’ Sc won’t get in the way
Former Senator Rene Saguisag is skeptical on a pre-election survey results showing the possibility of a Duterte daughter-and-father tandem in the 2022 elections.
Saguisag is adamant that the 1987 Constitution prohibits former presidents from running for vice president after a Publicus Asia-VOX survey showed President Rodrigo Duterte as the top choice for vice president in the 2022 elections with his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, the first choice for president.
“I teach that a Prez cannot run for Veep as he may not do indirectly what he cannot do directly. His intent is to be Prez again but reelection is constitutionally interdicted,” said Saguisag in his Manila Times column.
But Saguisag is not optimistic that High Court magistrates will stand in the way of Duterte getting a six- year term as the country’s top second banana.
“But again, the terrorized judiciary may rule that such unconstitutional circumvention of the framers’ intent is allowed,” he said.
But Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo was confident that the president “is not prohibited from running as vice president.”
“I’m not surprised. That has been done before in the City of Davao and both of them ran as mayor and vice mayor,” Panelo said.
