Sana totoo, sana soon: Senators want Duque out ASAP
Senators Risa Hontiveros, Kiko Pangilinan and Panfilo Lacson prefer the appointment of a new politiko to replace Health Secretary Francisco Duque III as the government draws flak for its lackluster response to the COVID-19 crisis.
Hontiveros said Monday (May 25) she is hoping that President Rodrigo Duterte will decide soon on whether or not to fire Duque as time is crucial in a time of crisis.
“Bawat araw, nawawala ang tiwala ng publiko sa anti-COVID-19 response ng gobyerno dahil kulang at magulo ang leadership ni Sec. Duque,” she said in a statement.
Pangilinan said he’s hopeful that the report about Duterte looking for a new Health Secretary is true. He noted that several senators had called for Duque’s resignation in April but this was ignored by Malacanang.
“Ang mahirap kasi sa Malacanan hindi natin alam ang tunay na pakay dahil kalimitan pabago bago ang sinasabi,” the senator said.
Lacson said Duque should consider resigning “as an act of sacrifice” for the sake of those who contracted COVID-19.
“Those people who did not even have the chance to be tested so they can be treated properly and not die in vain deserve an equal opportunity to be attended to by our health authorities,” he said.
Pangilinan said Duque’s replacement should not be involved in allegations of corruption.
“Ang papalit kung sakali man hindi dapat pinupulitika at nababahiran ng pangungurakot o overpricing ang mga programang pang kalusugan at kaligtasan ng taumbayan sa gitna ng pandemya. Gutom na at walang trabaho ang milyon nating mga kababayan tapos ninanakawan pa,” he said.
