TACLOBAN CITY – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte on Tuesday has introduced former Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez as “the next Speaker of the House of Representatives” in the latter’s bailiwick in Tacloban City.

During Tuesday’s proclamation rally of Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) in the Leyte capital, Mayor Duterte introduced Romualdez as the next House leader twice on stage in front of a jammed-pack Tacloban Astrodome.

“Si Cong. Martin Romualdez, ang natin na Speaker sa House of Representatives,” said Mayor Duterte.

Romualdez, president of the once powerful Lakas Christian-Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), earlier this month formally announced that he will seek the Speakership of the Lower House this coming July.

The former lawmaker said as an ally and coaltion partner of Malacañang, it was his duty to push the legislative agenda of President Rodrigo Duterte. Romualdez is running unopposed a legislator in the first district of Leyte.

For his part, Romualdez said he was humbled by such pronouncements coming from the Presidential daughter herself.

“Salamat po Ma’am tiwala, samalat opportunity. I was humbled by the mere mention of my name,” said Romualdez.

Romualdez is a nephew of former First Lady and Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Romualdez Marcos and first cousin of administration senatorial bet and incumbent Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos.

The Lakas-CMD President reportedly is the so-called ‘chosen one’ of former President and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to succeed her as the next House leader after she retires from politics this coming June 30.
