Sara vs. Leni in 2022? Robredo: I wouldn’t run for VP if I’m not ready to be president
A showdown between Vice President Leni Robredo and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte could happen in 2022 as the country’s second highest official expressed openness to running for president.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV Tuesday (August 13), Robredo said she is keeping her options open.
If you ask me now, I have no plans, but I am leaving everything open,” she said. “I wouldn’t have ran for the vice presidency if I didn’t feel I was ready for the presidency.”
President Rodrigo Duterte has rejected the prospect of Robredo succeeding him, saying the Vice President was “not capable” of running the country.
Robredo is the opposition’s top figure as chairperson of the Liberal Party.
Earlier this month, Sara said she will “pray for wisdom” about running for president in 2022. The presidential daughter has established herself as a force to be reckoned with by creating her own political party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago.
“Siguro para hindi tayo magkamali, we should pray for wisdom on how to go about it and how to decide,” Sara said on the television show of Kingdom of Jesus Christ founder Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.
“Everything is easier if it is the plan of God, so I think before I think about that, I should ask God first if is this for me,” she said.
Duterte, however, has discouraged his daughter from running for president, saying the stress of the job isn’t worth the pay she will get.
