SC rules with finality: ER Ejercito out as Laguna governor
The Supreme Court ruled with finality to uphold the decision of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) removing Laguna Governor Emilio Ramon “ER” Ejercito from his post for overspending in the 2013 midterm elections.
SC Public Information Office chief and spokesman Theodore Te said “no substantial new arguments” have been argued before the court “to merit a reconsideration.”
In November last year, SC justices voted unanimously to junk Ejercito’s petition questioning the decision of the Comelec en banc to unseat him.
The Comelec said Ejercito spent more than P20 million for his campaign. This is in violation of the authorized spending limit provided for under the Omnibus Election Code which is P4.5 million or P3 for every registered voter in his province.
Ejercito, nephew of former President and incumbent Manila mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada, has since been replaced by Vice Governor Ramil Hernandez. ##
