PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III is taking the “bigger picture” into consideration in his continuing search for the next Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.
Herminio Coloma Jr., the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) secretary, gave this excuse to reporters when quizzed on what was taking the Chief Executive so long in picking a replacement for the disgraced Director General Alan Purisima.
“Patuloy na pinag-aaralan ng Pangulo ang sitwasyon at patuloy siyang tumitingin doon sa mas malaking larawan na kung saan ay kinakailangan talagang magtalaga na ng isang permanenteng pinuno ng Philippine National Police,” Coloma said.
(The President continues to study the situation and continues to look at the bigger picture wherein there is truly a need to install a permanent PNP chief.)
It’s been three weeks since Purisima resigned as head of the national police force following the disastrous Special Action Force (SAF) mission in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last January 25.
But the four-star general hasn’t officially called the shots in the PNP since December, when he was suspended for six months by the Office of the Ombudsman over the Werfast courier contract controversy.
If anything, Coloma reckoned that PNP Officer-in-Charge, Deputy Director Leonardo Espina still enjoys the “confidence and trust” of the President.
“Matagal-tagal na rin siyang nagpeperform ng OIC functions simula noong December 4 at nananatili naman ‘yung kumpyansa at tiwala sa kanya ng Pangulo sa pagtupad sa kanyang tungkulin,” he said.
Espina was infamously kept in the dark by the SAF commander about the high-stakes Mamasapano mission allegedly upon the “advice” of the suspended Purisima, a close friend of Aquino’s. (Randy K. Ortega)
