Senators give state schools 2018 bonus: P10M cash, free wi-fi
The 112 state universities and colleges (SUCs) on Thursday received a “double treat” from senators after they granted them additional P10 million each for their capital outlay for 2018 as well as promised them “free wi-fi” in their campuses.
The Senate Committee on Finance, chaired by Sen. Loren Legarda, has approved the 2018 proposed budget of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) and SUCs amounting to P12.4 billion.
Legarda told CHEd and SUCs officials, who packed the session hall where the budget hearing was conducted, that the panel would find ways to fund free Internet access in all SUCs.
“We will provide free WiFi for all SUCs. We will find a budget for that,” she said. The government will need about P5 million for each SUC to fund free WiFi connection.
