‘Shape up’: Duterte scolds Customs chief for failed anti-drug smuggling efforts

President Rodrigo Duterte said he told Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to “shape up” as he noted the continued smuggling of illegal drugs into the country.
Duterte, in his taped public address late Monday, criticized Guerrero for relying on people who were “old hands” at the corruption-ridden BOC.
“Sinabi ko sa kanya straight, drug is still flowing inside the country sa Customs. Sabi ko, gusto ko sana sabihin kanina na, ‘di ba naghingi man ‘yan siya ng baril? Sabi ko, ‘I approved the purchase of firearms and until now wala ka napatay ni isa?’ So sabi ko sa kanya, ‘shape up’,” the Chief Executive also said.
“Kaya sabi ko sa kanya… gusto ko pumatay ka diyan ng… Tutal back up-an kita, hindi ka makulong. Basta droga, barilin, patayin mo. Iyan ang usapan eh. Tsk,” he added.
In an effort to prevent corruption, Duterte instructed Guerrero to reshuffle his bureau’s regional offices as soon as possible.
“I called Jagger, si Guerrero dito, Commissioner, sabi ko sa kanya, ‘I want to see a reshuffle of the different regional offices within the next two or three days’. That goes for the NBI pati PhilHealth,” the President said.
