She’s dismissed! Duterte admits firing Licuanan

President Rodrigo Duterte has admitted that Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairperson Licuanan’s resignation was his own doing.

In a speech in Davao City Monday (January 15), Duterte also warned that several government officials will suffer the same fate as Licuanan.

“Let me just say sa lahat I have dismissed Licuanan today, ‘yung sa CHED… And many will follow,” Duterte said.

Earlier in the day, Licuanan said she has decided it was “time to go.”

She said she received a phone call over the weekend from Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea asking her to resign.

“I am leaving because clearly I have become a lightning rod at CHED and my continued presence will only attract more controversy harmful to the agency,” she said.

While Licuanan said the allegations against her– such as excessive foreign travels and misuse of the K to 12 transition funds for teachers– are false, she believes her resignation will be for CHED’S benefit.

Licuanan resigned six months before her term ends in July.
