Malacañang downplayed the technical problem encountered by Philippine Airlines (PAL) plane shortly after its takeoff from the Los Angeles International Airport.

Speaking to reporters Friday, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said such incident happens in the airline industry.

“What is important to me walang nangyari. Safe ang mga pasahero,” Panelo added.

Videos taken by passengers aboard Flight PR113 and posted to social media showed flames spouting from one of its two large-diameter turbofan engines.

In a statement, PAL said its plane returned and landed safely after one of its engines caught fire.

“All 342 passengers and 18 crew members are safe and were able to disembark from the airplane using regular airstairs. We greatly appreciate the calmness and patience of our PR113 passengers, who cooperated well with our cabin crew during the flight and the emergency landing,” it said.
