Shut up na lang! Dick: Limit talking on sinking of PH ship to DFA, DND
Senator Richard Gordon on Wednesday called on government officials to refrain from making statements about the sinking of a Filipino fishing boat in the West Philippine Sea, and leave the talking to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of National Defense (DND).
In a statement, he said Cabinet officials who are not part of the negotiations should refrain from speaking or making statements about the incident where 22 crew of the Filipino fishing boat were left in peril when their boat sank after being hit by a Chinese fishing vessel off Recto Reef last June 9.
“Too many officials speaking, especially if they are not in sync with one another, may only weaken the country’s position on the incident. Let us leave the negotiations regarding the incident to the DFA, the DND and possibly the OSG (Office of the Solicitor General),” Gordon said.
He also pointed out that President Rodrigo Duterte has already declared his position to China, through the DFA, “hence, the diplomatic protest”.
He also urged everybody to refrain from forcing the President to issue strong statements that may later boomerang on him.
“Do not force the President to talk more. The President can’t be tied to a corner dahil kung iba ang lalabas sa investigation at taliwas iyon sa sinabi niya, hindi na niya mababawi (because if the result of the investigation is contrary to what he said, he could not retract it anymore),” Gordon said.
