Single forever? Lacson open to divorce without chance to remarry
Senator Panfilo Lacson is open to legalizing divorce in the country– provided that the party who initiated the proceedings can’t marry again.
Lacson told reporters Tuesday (August 6) that divorce shouldn’t be a “whimsical” decision that married couples could resort to when they encounter hardships.
“Let’s put it this way. Once in a lifetime, tapos the one who filed for divorce cannot remarry and the one who did not still can. Let’s see. The former will think a million times before he or she files for divorce kasi hindi ka na pwedeng mag-asawa uli pag ikaw nag-file for divorce at na-grant ang divorce,” he said.
Asked if it is “unfair” to ban the party who asked for divorce from remarrying, Lacson said his proposal is subject to discussions.
The senator acknowledged that annulment is a costly and inefficient way to end marriages.
“Kawawa ang walang pera kasi malaki ang gastos pabalik-balik ka sa korte tapos io-oppose pa yan ng SolGen as a matter of course kasi yan ang lawyer ng government,” he said.
Bills to legalize divorce have been filed both in the Senate and House of Representatives in the 18th Congress.
