President Rodrigo Duterte will not attend the enthronement ceremony of Japanese Emperor Naruhito on October 22.

“(Duterte) said he has so many work to do. He might be just sending somebody there,” Duterte’s spokesman Salvador Panelo told reporters Monday.

On May 1, Emperor Naruhito acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne upon the abdication of his father and former emperor Akihito.

Malacañang earlier said Naruhito’s enthronement would bring the Philippine-Japan ties to a “golden age.”

“We hope to build the ‘golden age’ for Philippines-Japan strategic partnership during the reign of the new Emperor. As PRRD himself said, Japan is our friend, closer even than a brother,” according to Panelo.
