Sorry na lang! Here’s why party-list coalition ditched Cayetano as speakership bet
The party-list coalition has whittled down its choice for the next House Speaker to two contenders: Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez.
While Taguig Rep. Alan Cayetano is vocal about his ambition to become Speaker, he’s been ruled out as a contender by the 54-member bloc.
The reason? Politiko’s source said Cayetano thumbed down the coalition’s demand for a 20-percent share of committee chairmanships.
The coalition has been firm about getting 20 percent of the committee chairmanships in the 18th Congress, since party-list lawmakers comprise a sizeable portion of House members.
Politiko’s source said only Velasco and Romualdez agreed to the group’s demand.
The party-list coalition has deferred its decision on who to endorse for Speaker until President Rodrigo Duterte makes his choice known on June 28.
