Speaker on vaping ban: ‘Anything that’s danger to health, dapat pumasok ang gobyerno’
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday said he supports President Rodrigo Duterte’s ban on vaping since it’s a “danger” to public health, but added that Congress should still pursue a bill taxing vaping products.
“We will support the President kasi…anything that’s a danger to health, dapat pumasok ang gobyerno,” he said in an event in Taguig City.
“Having said that, we want to make sure, wala ring fake o ‘yung mga kumbaga, bootleg, gawa rito na hindi regulated, maraming consequence kasi ang pagpo-prohibit, but sabi nga ng Pangulo, importation, and wag in public,” Cayetano said.
“Kasi ang nangyari, at the time na mina-market ito ng tobacco companies na healthier or less damaging than tobacco or ng smoking, between that time and now, ang daming lumabas na study, hinihintay pa natin yung science n’yan, but why take the risks,” he said.
“We don’t want people to get sick to fall ill etcetera but you know, we also listen to other side, na is it less harmful than smoking. But both are harmful, hindi natin dapat i-interchange ‘yung dalawa,” Cayetano said.
But the Speaker said he believes Congress should still pursue a piece of legislation recently passed by the House imposing taxes on vaping products.
“Ang tingin ko dapat ituloy, pero mag-uusap pa kami ni Congressman [Joey] Salceda sa Monday,” he said.
