Speaker recommends declaration of state of calamity in Pampanga
House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo visited the areas hit by the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that shook Luzon on Monday and Tuesday, including Chuzon supermarket in Porac, Pampanga, where a number of people remained trapped.
The Pampanga representative went to the site on Monday night and returned Tuesday after the Boao Forum for Asia at Shangri La at the Fort in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.
Speaking to local reporters, Arroyo said she had recommended the declaration of a state of calamity in Pampanga.
“Priority is to complete the rescue that is happening, and then we have to take care of those who have been rescued. We have to attend to their medical needs,” she said.
As for those who died, “we have to attend to their funeral requirements,” Arroyo said. “Those whose houses were destroyed and went to flee the earthquake, they have to be fed. So we are in the rescue and relief stage right now,” she added.
Arroyo added that it was not the right time for finger-pointing when she was asked about the possible liability of the municipal engineers.
“We are now in the relief and rescue stage, so yung mga ganung blame tossing, siguro saka na,” she said.
