Speaker to SEA Games delegates: ‘We want you to come back to PH’
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Sunday invited foreign participants to the 2019 Southeast Asian Games to return to the Philippines even after the regional sports meet was over.
Speaking at a gala dinner for the SEA Games, the chair of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) said he wanted the ASEAN guests to feel welcome in the country, even as he reiterated his apologies for logistical problems the suffered.
Addressing the foreign delegates, he said, “It is our hearts desire that Filipinos make the 10 other countries feel that you are as Filipino as we are, we want you to feel most welcome.”
“We want you to keep coming back to the Philippines, we want you to say not only did we enjoy, not only did we show the best of our athletes, but we do wanna come back to the Philippines because we feel that we were considered Filipinos when we were here,” Cayetano said.
“So if there are any inconveniences that were suffered at the start, please accept our apologies,” he said.
“Your athletes are asking—as our athletes and like anyone feels, you also experienced logistical issues in any of your events,” Cayetano said.
He compared the initial problems to a small pain on any part of the body.
Cayetano said: “We have a saying in Filipino that you know, ‘even if a small part of our body hurts, the whole body hurts.’ So as we start to take Southeast Asia as one, restart to understand that the pain of one is the hurt of everyone.”
