An administration lawmaker has urged President Rodrigo Duterte to support a contender for the Speakership who belongs to the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban) party
Reelected Pampanga Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales said the next House leader should still come from the administration party to ensure the smooth passage of the legislative agenda of President Duterte.
Duterte is chairman of PDP-Laban party.
“This is your party (Mr. President), at ito pong partido na ito at ang magiging Speaker—siya po ang magtutuloy sa mga magagandang programa ninyo at magpapalakas, makikipaglaban sa mga programan inumpisahan ninyo,” he said.
Gonzales, one of the three Speaker-wannabes within the ruling party, stressed he doesn’t care if the chief executive won’t endorse his Speakership bid for as long as he will chose the next House leader inside the PDP roster.
“Kung may pagkakataon po akong makausap ang Pangulo, isa lang po ang pakiusap ko: Mr. President kung pwede po, hindi ko po pinapakiusap ang sarili ko maging Speaker. Ang pinapakiusap ko po, ang dapat maging Speaker at tiga PDP Laban,” he said.
Gonzales warned that it might lead to a political disaster for the Duterte administration if another political party takes the House leadership at the opening of the 18thCongress on July 22.
He noted that Duterte still intends to pursue other campaign promises such as Charter Change and the proposed shift to a federal form of government.
Aside from the three Speaker-wannabes form the ruling party, two other hopefuls outside the PDP were also vying for the House leadership. They are Leyte Rep.-elect Ferdinand Martin Romualdez (Lakas-CMD) and Taguig-Pateros Rep.-elect Alan Peter Cayetano.
