‘Sponge boy’, 79 other Pinoys will study in China for free

China has granted scholarship to 80 Filipinos to study in China this year.

The Chinese embassy said among the scholarship grantees this year was Melvin Chua known as ‘Sponge boy’ of Makati and Taguig for selling sponges to fund his education from grade school to college.

The embassy said Chua has been given the chance to study in Beijing for a Master’s Degree in support of his dream.

The Chinese Government Scholarship is offered annually, providing opportunities to study in over 200 universities in China.

The scholarships are awarded through the Chinese Embassy in different countries.

The issued scholarship grants for this year covered majors such as International Relations, Corporate Management, Clinical Medicine, Engineering Management and Chinese Language for undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degrees. These scholarships provided free tuition, free lodging, stipend and health insurance for Peking University, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, Jinan University, Fujian Normal University and many other prestigious universities in China.
