Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco is still interested in taking over the House leadership as part of the term-sharing deal with Speaker Alan Cayetano.

Breaking his silence on Instagram, Velasco explained that he chose to stay mum out of respect of the incumbent Speaker.

“I have been silent during the duration of the Gentleman’s agreement in deference and respect to the sitting Speaker,” he said.

“My silence does not mean I am disinterested nor I have turned my back on the covenant,” he added.

Under the term-sharing deal forged by President Duterte, Cayetano will serve for 15 months or until October as House Speaker. Velasco will take over for the remaining 21 months. The Palace said the President hopes Cayetano will honor the term-sharing agreement with Velasco but will not interfere if the congressmen decide to retain the sitting Speaker.

The Marinduque solon also shed light on his decision to stay silent on issues, saying he did not want any publicity.

“‘Mum on issues’ means I just don’t want to call attention to myself,” he said.

“Being party to the term-sharing agreement, one does not and should not seek to compete with the current Speaker as a gentleman’s agreement is in force. We will have our turn at the right time,” he said.

Velasco said since he became a congressman, he has chosen to work “quietly, away from publicity” in support of the Duterte administration. He said he remains supportive of the President’s legislative agenda to improve the lives of the Filipino people.

Velasco said when both parties finally honor the agreement, he plans to show his colleagues his brand of leadership. “Thereafter, at the end of my term, my peers can then be the judge of my loyal service to
God, to the President, and ultimately, to the Filipino people,” he said.

When both parties finally honor the agreement, I will show my colleagues the kind of leadership I espouse.
