Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos immediately grabbed the chance to exact revenge on House Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas the moment she sensed House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez will be ousted.
Citing sources within the House of Representatives, the Philippine Star reported that Imee and her cousin, former Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, joined former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte ahead of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) Monday (July 23).
Duterte met Arroyo to settle the leadership takeover involving her and Alvarez.
Arroyo’s takeover was delayed since the House’s morning session was abruptly ended by Deputy Speaker Gwendolyn Garcia despite a motion to declare the speakership vacant by Deputy Speaker Rolando Andaya Jr.
The delay allowed Alvarez to fetch the President upon his arrival at Batasang Pambansa and sit on his side during the SONA.
The Star said Marcos attended the meeting to demand the replacement of Fariñas, who initiated an investigation against her over the alleged misuse of Ilocos Norte’s tobacco funds.
The House committee on good government and public accountability has recommended the filing of criminal charges against Marcos and other local officials of Ilocos Norte.
Arroyo was elected Speaker during a session convened after Duterte’s SONA even without a mace in place.
A total of 184 House members voted for Arroyo while 12 abstained.
