Swapang sa pwesto! Mon Tulfo tells how Cayetano’s wife blocked Bongbong from meeting Duterte
Taguig Rep. Lani Cayetano may have an angelic face, but she’s just as cunning as her husband, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano.
Special Envoy to China Mon Tulfo shared in his November 28 column for the Manila Times how Lani blocked former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. from seeing President Rodrigo Duterte after the 2016 elections.
Alan and Marcos both lost in the vice presidential race.
Tulfo wrote that Marcos was supposed to see Duterte in a restaurant when he visited China in October 2016.
Alan and Lani were able to sit with Duterte with the help of then-Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go, whom Tulfo observed favored the Cayetanos.
“At the duck restaurant, where I was one of those seated at the presidential table, the chair that was supposed to be occupied by Bongbong Marcos was taken by Cayetano’s wife Lani, who didn’t give way when the latecomer Marcos arrived,” Tulfo recalled.
Since the table had limited seats, Tulfo said Marcos chose not to join the lunch with Duterte “to avoid placing the President in an embarrassing position.”
Tulfo shared the incident in China with Marcos and the Cayetanos amid the controversy Alan is facing over the country’s hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
He said Go, now a senator, “probably rues choosing Cayetano over Bongbong when he was caught between a rock and a hard place at the Chinese restaurant in Beijing.”
Go recently announced his plan to conduct a Senate investigation on the SEA Games after it ends on December 11.
Cayetano is the chairman of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc), a private foundation he established to organize the athletic meet.
