Talo kung walang backer! Alan Cayetano admits seeking Duterte’s nod for Speakership bid
Former Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano has admitted to asking for President Rodrigo Duterte’s endorsement to run for Speaker in the 18th Congress.
In an interview over ANC’s “Headstart” Wednesday (October 17), Cayetano said some people broached the idea of running for Speaker to him since House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will not be running for re-election.
He recalled telling Duterte, “I’ve been observing and I think you know I can contribute I can help na yung gulo.”
Cayetano said Duterte assured him of his support though he noted “heaviness” in the President’s response.
The former Secretary, who is running for congressman of Taguig City’s first district, likened his request for Duterte’s permission to someone’s search for a backer.
“The way it works is if you wanna be promoted or you wanna have another show, you don’t just go up to the president of ABS-CBN and say, ‘I want this.’ You find someone close to them and say na you’re considering, anong tingin niya,” he said.
“So I have to lay it on his table and then siya ang mag-decide. I did ask for it but he decided for me,” Cayetano said of the President.
The Cayetanos will continue their dynasty in case they win the 2019 polls. Aside from Alan, those running in the upcoming elections are his wife, Lani, for congresswoman of Taguig City’s first district, brother Lino for mayor and sister Pia for senator.
