The Department of Justice (DOJ) Oversight Committee has approved the release of 34 more surrenderers.
This was revealed by DOJ deputy spokesman and Assistant Secretary Neal Bainto as the DOJ and Bureau of Corrections continues to determine who among the surrenderers should be freed.
“The Oversight Committee has approved the release of another 34 PDL (persons deprived of liberty)-surrenderers, per recommendation by the Joint Task Force,” he said.
“This batch of 34 individuals, once released by BuCor, should bring the total released PDL-surrenderers to 158,” he added.
There have been 2,221 released prisoners who heeded the call of President Rorigo Duterte to surrender.
The number is already way more than the 1,914 listed by the BuCor to have been released because of good conduct time allowance (GCTA) and were supposed to surrender.
The order to surrender was issued to address fears that unqualified inmates including those convicted of heinous crimes have have benefited from the GCTA law.
