Tama si Marcos! Duterte wants to change name of Philippines to ‘Maharlika’

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday expressed intent to rename the Philippines to “Maharlika.”
Duterte made the statement during an agrarian reform event in Maguindanao.
“Philippines because it was discovered by Magellan using the money of King Philip (II of Spain), kaya pagdating ng ulol ginawang Philippines. Pero okay na ‘yan, balang araw palitan natin,” the President said.
Duterte said he agrees with the proposal of former President Ferdinand Marcos to change the name of the country.
“Actually, tama si Marcos, panahon ni Marcos, tama talaga si Marcos. Gusto niyang palitan ‘Maharlika’, the ‘Republic of Maharlika’ because ‘Maharlika’ is a Malay word and it means more of a concept of serenity and peace. Tama si Marcos noon,” the chief executive added.
In 2017, Magdalo-Party List Representative Gary Alejano filed House Bill No. 5867 that seeks to create a commission that will look into renaming the Philippines.
