Tang: Sandiganbayan to keep mum on bill seeking to clip court’s powers

Instead of giving its opinion on the matter, the Sandiganbayan has preferred to seal its lips on the proposal to prevent the anti-graft court from suspending public officials.

“We asked them that we be excused from submitting any comment kasi at the end of the day, kami ang mag-iinterpret and everything about the law,” explained Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang.

Recently, the House of Representatives (HOR) asked the Sandiganbayan for comment on the proposal as embodied under House Bill (HB) 3605 filed by Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

However, the anti-graft court declined this.

Tang explained that the Supreme Court (SC) has already ruled that the HOR has sole power to suspend its members, although the Sandiganbayan can also do this under the anti-graft law, particularly during the conduct of an investigation.
