President Rodrigo Duterte believes he reaped the rewards of his late father’s loyalty to the Marcoses when Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos threw her support behind his candidacy in the May polls.
In his speech before local officials from Luzon Tuesday (Oct. 4), Duterte revealed that Imee donated her own money to his campaign kitty at a time when he was still struggling to bankroll his presidential bid.
The President surmised that Imee’s support was their family’s way of paying back the loyalty his father, former Davao governor Vicente Duterte, showed to the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.
“My father was one of the two who stood by Marcos in his darkest hours. Everybody was shifting to the Liberal at that time, kay Diosdado Macapagal. And it was only Ebarle and my father who stood by Marcos,” Duterte said.
As a reward for his father’s loyalty, the President said the elder Duterte was appointed to Marcos’ Cabinet after he won the presidency.
“So ‘yan ang ano namin. I cannot really disassociate…,” he said.
