The more applicants, the merrier: JBC extends search for new Chief Justice
The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has decided to keep open in accepting applications for the successor of retiring Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin.
“Deadline for applications to Supreme Court CJ position moved to Sept. 2,” JBC ex officio member and Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra announced on Thursday (August 22).
The deadline for the applications was supposed to have closed last August 20.
So far, those who have met the deadline are SC Justices Diosdado Peralta, Estela Perlas-Bernabe, Andres Reyes Jr. And Jose Reyes Jr.
The JBC begun accepting applications and nominations last July 5 in anticipation to the October 18 retirement of Bersamin.
Bersamin, who is the son of late former Abra governor Luis Bersamin Sr., has been appointed chief justice by President Rodrigo Duterte on Nov. 28, 2018.
Prior his appointment, he has been serving as Supreme Court (SC) justice since his appointment on March 10, 2003 by then President Gloria Macapasgal-Arroyo.
He also served as Quezon City regional trial court judge and Court of Appeals (CA) justice.
